WCDC2018 will feature both submitted and invited sessions that address community development and its concerns for academics, practitioners, policy makers and stakeholders at all levels of experience.
The organising group of WCDC2018 welcomes abstracts and proposals for oral presentations, practice workshops, poster presentations, film screenings and visual arts responses which are reflective of the overall conference focus and related to one of the conference themes.
Proposals should relate to community development practice, processes and problems. If proposals are developed from disciplines other than community development, a clear connection must be made with community development. WCDC2018 encourage submissions from a wide range of perspectives and participants, both globally and thematically.
The working language of the conference will be English. If participants require language assistance please note this in your proposal. We will work with people on ideas they have to assist them in finalising their proposals for the conference.

Oral presentations
Oral presentations will be allocated a 30 minute timeslot, to include questions. To be considered for an oral presentation you must first submit a proposal of no more than 300 words. This proposal will be subject to peer review.
Proposals will be considered for quality, originality, how well they reflect the conference focus and themes, and contribution to existing analysis, practice, policy and research.
What to include in your proposal:
- A brief biography
- A concise description of your presentation, your methods, analysis, findings and/or outcomes.
- Address the focus and at least one of the themes of the WCDC2018.
As this is an international conference the working language of the conference will be English. If participants require language assistance please note this in your proposal.

Practice workshops
Practice workshops are an opportunity to share or apply the outcomes of completed or on-going work with a wide audience. Workshops must be participative and allow for as much exchange of practice and learning between participants as possible.
Workshops will be allocated a maximum of 90 minute timeslots. To be considered for a practice workshop you must first submit a proposal of no more than 300 words. This proposal will be subject to peer review.
Proposals will be considered for quality, originality, how well they reflect the conference focus and themes, and contribution to existing analysis, practice, policy and research.
What to include:
- A brief description of the projects/presenters
- The topic of the workshop
- A concise description and outline of the workshop session
- Who your workshop is aimed at
- What participants will do/learn and achieve
- Address the focus and at least one of the themes of the WCDC2018

Poster presentations
Posters are can be appropriate for providing a visual presentation of complex ideas or summaries of work that lend themselves to collegial and informal discussion.
To be considered for a poster presentation you must first submit a proposal of no more than 300 words. This proposal will be subject to peer review. Posters must be presented in the form of an A1 printed poster which you should bring to the conference.
Proposals will be considered for quality, originality, how well they reflect the conference focus and themes, and contribution to existing analysis, practice, policy and research.
What to include in your proposal:
- A brief biography
- Address the focus and at least one of the themes of the WCDC2018.
- Purpose: What is the intent or goal of the project? What problem is being addressed?
- Description: Why is this an important issue to address? What methods and processes are being used to address the issue?
- Evaluation/Outcome: What are the outcomes of the project? How is success measured?

Film screenings
Film allows for the unique strengths of visual expression to share analytic insights and for visual storytelling to step beyond the power of words alone.
To be considered for a film screening you must first submit a proposal of no more than 300 words. This proposal will be subject to peer review. Films should be no longer than 30 minutes. We will accept proposals for non-English films accompanied by a written transcript in English.
Proposals will be considered for quality, originality, how well they reflect the conference focus and themes, and contribution to existing analysis, practice, policy and research.
What to include in your proposal:
Address the focus and at least one of the themes of the WCDC2018.
- A brief bio of the organisation and/or film makers.
- A description of the film.
- The length of film.
- Link to the focus/theme of conference
- A link to a draft of your video/animation submission (On Dropbox, Vimeo, YouTube, a secure website, etc)

Visual arts responses
Visual art forms from both established and emerging artists will be considered. Proposals are welcomed from a range of visual media: Photography, drawing, paintings, sculpture, mixed media, film installation, photography, illustration, craftwork, etc. There are no pre-defined size limits but space restrictions may apply. Installation assistance will be offered by the team organising the exhibition but transportation costs and insurance are the responsibility of the artist.
To be considered for a visual arts response you must first submit a proposal of no more than 300 words and up to ten images of your work. This proposal will be subject to peer review.
Proposals will be considered for quality, originality, how well they reflect the conference focus and themes, and contribution to existing analysis, practice, policy and research.
What to include in your proposal:
- A brief biography of the artist
- A description of the art work, creative and critical thinking
- How work addresses the focus and at least one of the themes of the WCDC2018
- No more than ten images of your work, including the work you intend to exhibit at WCDC18
- Dimensions of art work
- Requirements/needs for exhibiting the work
